Egide Abahuje, MD

Simulation Education Fellow, Brigham and Women's Hospital, General Surgeon, Rwanda

Edige Abahuje, MD, is a general surgeon and lecturer of Surgery at the University of Rwanda. He is a simulation education fellow at Neil and Elise Wallace STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is interested in Simulation-based health professions education, minimally invasive surgery and improving access to safe surgery in LMICs.

Zaitun Bokhary, MD

Pediatric Surgeon, Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania

Zaitun Bokhary, MD is a pediatric surgeon at Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Medicine at Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry. Following that she received her master’s at Tumaini University and has since been working at the head paediatric surgical unit at Muhimbili National Hospital. She is a partner surgeon with KidsOR.

Robert Brady, MD

Founder and Director, Straight Caribbean Spine Foundation

Robert Brady, MD is an orthopedic surgeon practicing in Connecticut. In 2006 he started the Straight Caribbean Spine Foundation, through which he has worked with Jamaican ministry of health and ministry of finance, local Jamaican orthopaedic surgeons, anesthetists and nurses to provide care to children with complex spinal conditions. The organization makes semiannual trips to Jamaica in order to run a specialty clinic which sees and examines the most complicated cases of spinal deformities with a focus on capacity building through surgical instruction and didactics.

Moses Galukande, MD PhD

Chair, Department of Surgery, Makerere College of Health Sciences, Uganda

Moses Galukande, MD PhD, MSc, FCS(ECSA) is a general Surgeon and Chair at the Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine, Makerere University College of Health Sciences. He is a general surgeon with two decades of active practice, in both rural and urban African settings. His research interests include triple negative breast cancer oncogenesis and prognostic biomarkers among Ugandan women, trauma, access to health care and health professions' education.

Ambereen Sleemi, MD 

Executive Director, International Medical Response

Ambereen Sleemi, MD, MPH, FPMRS, FACOG is a female pelvic & reconstructive surgeon and trained obstetric fistula surgeon. She is the ED and surgical director of International Medical Response and has held leadership roles for the Eritrean Women’s Project, Medicine in Action & the International Society for Obstetric Fistula Surgeons. She started the Haitian Women’s Health Collaborative in partnership with the National Hospital in Port-au-Prince which has expanded throughout the country. She currently heads surgical programs in Haiti, Malawi and Liberia.

Janat Tumukunde, MD

Lecturer in Anesthesia, Makerere College of Health Sciences, Uganda

Janat Tumukunde, MBChB, MMed(Anesthesia) pediatric anesthesiologist at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. She completed her anesthesia residency at Mulago and fellowship training in Pediatric anesthesia at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Capetown, South Africa.

Garreth Wood

Philanthropist and Founder, KidsOR, Scotland

Garreth Wood is a Scottish Entrepreneur & Philanthropist. His interest in philanthropy started at a young age and he has been involved with a number of UK charities. In early 2018 Garreth sold his Scottish restaurant business to fully focus on philanthropic activities. Garreth and his wife Nicola founded Kids Operating Room in January 2018, with the vision of ‘A world where every child has equal access to safe surgery’. Garreth lives by the philosophy that ‘life is about finding the right balance between what you do for yourself and what you can do for others’.

Julia Cron, MD

Assistant Professor and Program Director, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yale

Juila Cron, MD is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale New Haven Hospital. She also serves as the Residency Program Director for the Department of Obstetrics Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Yale School of Medicine. Her clinical practice focuses on the care of girls and young women. Dr. Cron is involved in women’s health advocacy at the local and national levels.

Viji Kurup, MD

Associate Professor of Anesthesia, Yale

Viji Kurup, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Yale. Viji completed her Residency in Anesthesiology and Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia at Yale. She is currently Section Chief for the Division of Medical Education as well as Director of the Yale Anesthesia Media Lab. Her academic interests include participating in Global Health Educational projects with Health Volunteers Overseas and exploring innovative ways of integrating technology in medical education. She is also the Co- Chair for the Global health and outreach committee in the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA).

Melanie Sion, MD

Associate Professor, Trauma and Emergency General Surgery, Yale

Melanie Sion, MD is an Assistant Professor of General Surgery, Trauma & Surgical Critical Care at Yale New Haven hospital. She completed her General Surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she also completed a Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowship and then went on to complete a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Brigham and Woman’s hospital. She has a longstanding collaboration with the surgery department at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Malawi

Michelle Telfer, DNP

Assistant Professor, Nurse Midwifery, Yale

Michelle Telfer DNP, MPH, CNM is a midwife & Assistant Professor at Yale University School of Nursing (YSN) with an appointment at the School of Medicine. She is the coordinator for the midwifery Uganda collaboration at YSN, a bi-directional capacity building partnership that includes curriculum support, research & clinical experiences with Makerere University faculty & Mother Health International. She has worked in Sierra Leone & The Gambia. Currently, she practices at the Vidone Birthing Center and the Women’s Center in New Haven.

Ravi Parikh, MD MPH

Retina Fellow, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston

Ravi Parikh, MD, MPH is an ophthalmologist currently completing a Retina fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. His current focus is improving utilization and access to clinical therapies to treat and prevent blindness. He is collaborating with the retinal service at LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad India to validate the use of low cost and effective intravitreal treatments for blinding diseases such as Age Related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy, studying how medication and surgery costs vary across countries, and how to decrease errors in ophthalmic surgery.

Saad Omer, MBBS MPH PhD

Director, Yale Institute for Global Health, Yale

Saad Omer, MBBS, MPH, PhD will be the inaugural director of the Yale Institute for Global Health and associate dean for global health research at the School of Medicine. He is currently the William H. Foege Professor of Global Health and professor of epidemiology and at Emory University. His research includes clinical and field trials to estimate efficacy and immunogenicity of multiple vaccines; the impact of spatial clustering of vaccine refusers; and clinical trials to evaluate drug regimens to reduce mother-to- child transmission of HIV in Africa. interventions to increase immunization coverage and acceptance.

Eddie Mandhry, MSc

Director for African Collaborations, Yale

Eddie Mandhry, MSc is responsible for supporting the university’s Africa initiatives by working with faculty to develop partnerships between Yale and African institutions in the private and public sectors, supporting admissions recruitment in Africa, building Yale’s alumni networks, and expanding press and social media coverage on the continent. Previously, Eddie was the Associate Director of NYU Africa House. He is a Carnegie New Leader and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.

Girma Tefera, MD

Professor of Surgery, Section of Vascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Madison

Girma Tefera, MD, FACS is a vascular surgeon and professor of surgery, department of surgery, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Madison. He is currently the Medical Director of the American College of Surgeon the Operation Giving Back (OGB) Program.

Dr. Tahmina Banu

Professor Banu is a Pediatric Surgeon at Chittagong Medical College & Hospital in Bangladesh. She is currently working as Director, Chittagong Research Institute for Children Surgery and is fellow of Royal College of Surgeons and Rowan Nicks fellow of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She has worked extensively to improve children’s surgical care within Bangladesh and globally, pioneering an a surgical outreach program to bring services to rural regions and has developed low-cost techniques to treat common surgical conditions such as stoma care using betel leaves and using a bananagram in place of distal cologram. She currently serves on the board of directors for the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery.

Dr. Luc Malemo

Dr. Luc Malemo is a general surgeon from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is one of the first international surgeons selected for the McGill University Jean-Martin Laberge Fellowship in Global Pediatric Surgery, and is currently working towards a PhD in Experimental Surgery at McGill. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, he served as as Chief Surgeon and Hospital Director HEAL Africa, which operates a tertiary care hospital and develops training and community-based health care programs. In 2015, Malemo became the director of the first surgical residency program in the North Kivu accredited by the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa.

Call for Abstracts

Abstracts for poster presentations at the Yale Global Surgery Symposium must be submitted by April 15, 2019 to be reviewed and accepted. All abstracts relevant to the field of global surgery are eligible for review. 

 

Previously presented posters are also eligible for consideration.

 

Guidelines for the abstract are listed below:

  • Maximum number of authors: 10 (including the lead author)

  • Structure: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Conclusions

  • Word limit: 350 words for entire abstract (does not include the title)

  • Table or figure criteria: Maximum one table or figure per abstract

  • All co-authors must disclose financial relationships 

 

Posters may be presented by students, residents, or faculty. The posters should be posted by 8:30AM on the day of the symposium and the poster session will be held in the lobby of The Anylan Center (TAC) during the lunch break from approximately 12-1pm during which time presenters are expected to be at their poster. The first-named author is presumed to be the presenter (changes must be sent to the e-mail listed above).
